There are a wide variety of choices available for women when it comes to perfumes or scents. Colognes, body mists, body sprays and perfumes of different brands are filling up the market. Scent manufacturers are also undertaking marketing strategies and advertising campaigns that further push their products with celebrity endorsements, attractive packaging and name branding that gets us confused when we are choosing for scents to purchase.

The amount of fragrance you will be applying on your body should depend on the type of fragrance you have bought. We all know that eau de perfume contains more aromatic compounds than that of eau de toilette or eau de cologne. The more aromatic compounds the longer the fragrance lasts so the lesser amount you should be applying. But whether the scent would last the whole day or just minutes it is important that you don’t overdo it. We don’t want to be wearing too much of the scent causing a very overpowering smell that can sometimes irritate other people’s noses. This is especially true for young women who are not used to always wearing scents and older women whose sense of smell start to diminish. We have that habit of re-applying perfume when we feel that we don’t smell it anymore. We have to remember that when a scent stays with us, our nose gets used to it after several minutes that we no longer notice it. We may not smell it anymore but others who just approach us can definitely smell it. Majority of the perfumes are meant to last for hours. It would be best to re-apply once in the morning and then again in the evening. Avoid applying a different scent unless you have taken a shower. We don’t want our scents to be mixing.

It is recommended that you have different perfumes for the different seasons. Perfume reacts differently on your skin under varying seasonal conditions. In the summer it can be very hot and humid while it may be very cold in the winter. Try different fragrances for the different seasons to find out what is best suited for your skin type.

Perfume is not meant to last long and has a shelf life of around 3 years from date of manufacture. With proper storage you can lengthen the shelf life of your perfume. For eau de perfume always store it in a dry dark place. For eau de toilette and eau de cologne avoid it being exposed to high temperatures for it reacts differently.

When you find fragrances that suit you, stick with them. These will become your signature scents that every time others may smell them they can easily associate it with you.
